View From Seilebost. Original Etching.

This is an original etching, hand-inked and printed on an antique cast iron press.

This image is of Traigh Seilebost – a spectacular, unspoilt beach on the Isle of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides. It is autumn. The sea is unusually calm, with just a few rippling waves pushing crystal clear water into small inlets between the rocks. The sky is smudged with a few soft, white clouds. In the foreground, the machair leans slightly in the breeze while the mountains stand strong in the background.

To create the image a metal plate was coated with an acid-resist and a drawing was made directly onto the surface with a fine etching needle. The plate was then etched in an acid bath – during this process areas of the image protected with varnish. The exposed areas of metal are bitten away by the acid, forming recesses that can hold ink.
For each print, the metal plate is hand-inked and wiped then pulled through an etching press under high pressure, As the inking process is completed by hand, each print has slight variations – a unique piece of art.
